| Retro Weekend - Saturday |
|
Saturday 27th February - Had to be up earlier than I wanted to but it was all for a good cause - it was my old producer from Rockworlds' hen party in a London supper club tonight. After packing my Stop Staring 40's trouser suit very carefully into a bag and catching the midday train I made my way to the Maid of Honours' flat. After meeting a few of the girls and a few cups of tea, we got changed and got a very scary cab over to the Bride-to-Be's house. This was only my second hen party and I wasn't sure what to expect and I managed to shout 'Bollocks' in front of the mother-of-the-Bride just before we were introduced. I've never been a great one for tact or girly nights...
But this one was a little different. We had dinner booked at the Pigalle Club, a jazz supper venue with a live band and cocktails. We were all dressed in a suitably retro style - swing dresses, curls, heels and fascinators - and despite the rain we werer determined to have a good night. London Underground had other ideas as we got stuck on an over crowded platform and squiged into complete strangers in a damp, uncomfortable saturday night. Classy. After fighting our way through the crowd into Picadilly Circus and to the club, where, down three flights of stairs, we were shown to our table. After discovering they had no beer on draught (!?) I got a bottled beer and the band began as they took our food order. The meal was delicious and the band were amazing, the only thing I would have changed is that I wanted the staff to look retro too, in little waistocats and hats maybe.
When dinner was over we started to dance and we didn't stop until 2 am, after which we battled the rain to find a cab to take us home. Our spirits a little 'dampaned', the cabbie cheered us up with stories of previous clients including a very rude Michael Barrymore and a drugged George Michael. Cups of tea and cheese toast before bed, bliss.
